Your smartphone is a data goldmine — location history, browsing habits, app usage, and more. Many apps and services track you in the background without you realizing it. Here’s how to shut down the worst offenders.
For iPhone Users
1. Stop Location Tracking (3 min)
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Turn off for apps that don’t need it, or set them to While Using the App.
2. Disable Significant Locations (2 min)
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations.
- Toggle it off — this prevents your phone from storing a detailed map of everywhere you’ve been.
3. Limit Ad Tracking (1 min)
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising.
- Toggle off Personalized Ads.
For Android Users
1. Stop Location Tracking (3 min)
- Go to Settings > Location and turn off for unused apps.
- You can also toggle Use Location off entirely when you don’t need it.
2. Delete Location History (2 min)
- Open Google Maps > Your Timeline.
- Tap the menu > Settings & Privacy, then choose Delete all Location History.
3. Turn Off Ad Personalization (1 min)
- Go to Settings > Google > Ads.
- Toggle on Opt out of Ads Personalization.
For Both iPhone & Android
4. Audit App Permissions (2 min)
- Review what each app can access — camera, microphone, contacts.
- Revoke anything that feels unnecessary.
5. Use Privacy-Focused Browsers (Optional)
- Consider switching to Brave, DuckDuckGo, or Firefox Focus for less tracking while browsing.
SafeTechGuide:
You can’t stop all tracking — but you can drastically reduce it. Spend 10 minutes going through these settings, and your phone will be a lot less chatty with advertisers, data brokers, and tech giants.
